MX Lookup

Enter a domain to see which mail servers accept its email, in priority order, and whether each one actually resolves — for anyone setting up email or working out why mail is not arriving.

What is an MX record?

An MX (mail exchanger) record is a DNS record that names the server responsible for receiving email for a domain. Each MX record has a priority number and a hostname. Sending servers look the records up, try the lowest number first, and fall back to the next if it does not answer.

How MX priority works

The number in front of each MX host is its preference. Lower means tried first. A sender connects to the lowest-numbered host, and only moves to a higher number if that one is unreachable. Hosts with the same number share the load at random.

example.com. MX 1 aspmx.l.google.com.
example.com. MX 5 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.
example.com. MX 5 alt2.aspmx.l.google.com.

Here mail goes to the first host. If it is down, senders pick either of the two hosts at priority 5. The numbers only matter relative to each other — 1, 5, 10 behaves exactly like 10, 50, 100.

How to read the results

FindingWhat it means
MX records found, all resolveMail delivery is set up correctly at the DNS level.
No MX recordsSenders fall back to the domain's A record. Mail usually bounces unless a mail server runs there.
Null MX (0 .)The domain has declared that it accepts no email. Intentional, and correct for parked domains.
MX host does not resolveThe hostname has no A or AAAA record. Mail to that host fails; if it is the only one, all mail bounces.
MX host is a CNAMENot allowed by the mail standards. Some senders cope, others defer or reject.
MX points to an IP addressInvalid. An MX record must contain a hostname.
Only one MX hostNot an error — large providers publish one name backed by many servers — but a single self-hosted server has no fallback.

When the hostnames belong to a well-known provider, the tool names it, which is a quick way to confirm where a domain's mailboxes really live.

How to fix common MX problems

Mail bounces with "no MX" or "host not found". Add the MX records your mail provider lists. Enter them exactly, including the trailing dot if your DNS host asks for fully qualified names — a missing dot can turn mx.provider.com into mx.provider.com.example.com.

The MX host is a CNAME. Point the MX record at the final hostname the CNAME leads to, which must have its own A or AAAA record:

; wrong
example.com. MX 10 mail.example.com.
mail.example.com. CNAME mailhost.provider.net.

; right
example.com. MX 10 mailhost.provider.net.

Old provider's records are still there after a migration. Remove them. A leftover MX with a lower number keeps receiving your mail at the old provider.

A domain that should receive no email. Publish a null MX so senders fail immediately instead of retrying for days:

example.com. MX 0 .
MX records only control inbound mail. Whether your outbound mail is trusted depends on SPF, DKIM and DMARC — check them with the SPF checker and DMARC checker.

MX records for common providers

ProviderMX host pattern
Google Workspacesmtp.google.com (or the older aspmx.l.google.com set)
Microsoft 365yourdomain-com.mail.protection.outlook.com
Zoho Mailmx.zoho.com, mx2.zoho.com, mx3.zoho.com
Fastmailin1-smtp.messagingengine.com, in2-smtp.messagingengine.com
Proton Mailmail.protonmail.ch, mailsec.protonmail.ch

Always copy the values from your provider's own setup page. Some change by region or by account.

  • The rules for MX targets come from RFC 5321, section 5.1.
  • Null MX is defined in RFC 7505.

Preguntas frecuentes

What does MX priority mean?

+

It is the order in which sending servers try a domain's mail hosts. The lowest number is tried first. Higher numbers are backups, used only when the lower ones cannot be reached. Hosts with equal numbers are chosen at random to spread the load.

What happens if a domain has no MX record?

+

Sending servers fall back to the domain's A or AAAA record and try to deliver there. Unless a mail server is listening at that address, the message bounces. To state clearly that a domain takes no mail, publish a null MX instead.

Can an MX record point to an IP address?

+

No. An MX record must contain a hostname, and that hostname needs an A or AAAA record. Putting an IP address in the MX field is invalid, and many senders will refuse to deliver.

Can an MX record point to a CNAME?

+

It should not. The mail and DNS standards require the MX target to resolve directly to an address. Many servers follow the alias anyway, but some do not, which leads to delivery failures that are hard to trace.

How long do MX record changes take to work?

+

Until the old record's TTL expires in resolver caches — commonly an hour, sometimes up to a day. Lower the TTL to 300 seconds a day before a mail migration so the switch itself takes only a few minutes.

Do I need a backup MX server?

+

With a hosted provider, no: their single MX name is already backed by many servers. With one self-hosted server it helps less than it seems, because sending servers queue and retry for days anyway, and backup MX hosts are a favorite target for spam.

How do I set up an MX record?

+

In your DNS provider, add a record of type MX on the domain (or @), set the mail server hostname your email provider gives you as the value, and set the priority they list. Add every server they give you, remove MX records for old providers, then run this lookup to confirm the new records are visible.
