DKIM Checker

Enter a domain — and a selector if you know it — to find its DKIM public keys and check that each one is valid and strong enough, for anyone setting up or auditing email signing.

What is a DKIM record?

A DKIM record is a DNS TXT record that publishes a public key at selector._domainkey.yourdomain.com. The sending server signs each message with the matching private key, and receivers fetch the public key to confirm the message really came from that domain and was not changed on the way.

Why you need a selector

A domain can publish many DKIM keys at once — one per sending service — and each lives under its own name, the selector. DNS offers no way to list them. The only place a selector is announced is inside a signed message, in the s= tag of the DKIM-Signature header.

So this tool does two things. It checks any selector you type, and it also tries the default selectors of the large providers, such as google, selector1, selector2, s1, k1 and default. If it finds nothing, that does not prove DKIM is missing. It means the key is under a selector the tool did not guess.

How to find your DKIM selector

  1. Send an email from the system you want to check to an address you can read.
  2. Open the message and view its raw source — "Show original" in Gmail, "View message source" in Outlook.
  3. Find the DKIM-Signature header whose d= value is your domain.
  4. The s= value in that header is the selector. Enter it above.

How to read the results

CheckPassProblem
Key foundA TXT record with a p= tag exists at the selectorNothing at any tried selector — inconclusive, enter your own
Key sizeRSA 2048 bits or more, or Ed255191024 bits is weak; under 1024 is rejected by receivers
Key readableThe p= value decodes to a valid public keyTruncated or badly split — usually a copy-paste error
Not revokedp= contains a keyAn empty p= means the key was deliberately revoked
Not in test modeNo t=y flagt=y tells receivers to ignore failures

Key sizes come from RFC 8301: signers must use at least 1024 bits and should use 2048, and receivers must not accept anything smaller than 1024.

How to fix common DKIM problems

The key is 1024 bits. Generate a new 2048-bit key in your mail provider's admin console, publish it under a new selector, switch signing to it, and remove the old record a week later once mail signed with the old key has been delivered.

The key will not decode. A 2048-bit key is longer than the 255 characters one DNS string can hold, so it has to be split into several quoted strings in a single TXT record. Some DNS control panels do this for you and others need it done by hand:

google._domainkey TXT ( "v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=MIIBIjANBgkqhkiG9w0BAQEFAAOCAQ8A..." "...rest of the key...IDAQAB" )

The record is a CNAME. That is normal for Microsoft 365 and many email services: the CNAME points at a key they host and rotate. This checker follows it.

t=y is still set. Remove the flag once you have confirmed signatures verify. While it is there, DKIM adds no protection.

DKIM proves a message was signed by a domain. It does not say that domain matches the From address — DMARC adds that. Check yours with the DMARC checker.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is a DKIM selector?

+

A selector is a label that picks one DKIM key out of the several a domain may publish. It forms the first part of the DNS name: with selector google and domain example.com, the key is at google._domainkey.example.com. Each sending service normally has its own selector.

Why does the checker say no DKIM record was found?

+

Because selectors cannot be listed from DNS. The tool tries well-known defaults, and yours may be different. Take the s= value from the DKIM-Signature header of a message you sent and enter it. Only then is a not-found result meaningful.

Should a DKIM key be 1024 or 2048 bits?

+

2048 bits. A 1024-bit RSA key is still accepted by receivers, but it is considered weak and should be replaced. Keys shorter than 1024 bits are rejected outright. Ed25519 keys are also valid and much shorter, though not every receiver verifies them yet.

How often should DKIM keys be rotated?

+

Every six to twelve months is a common practice, and immediately if a private key may have been exposed. Rotation is safe if you publish the new key under a new selector first, switch signing, then retire the old record after a few days.

Can a domain have more than one DKIM record?

+

Yes, and most do. Each email service you use signs with its own key under its own selector, and they do not conflict. This is unlike SPF and DMARC, where a domain must have exactly one record.

Does DKIM survive email forwarding?

+

Usually yes. The signature covers the message headers and body, not the sending server's IP, so a forwarded message still verifies as long as it was not modified. Mailing lists that add a footer or change the subject will break it.

How do I fix a DKIM failure?

+

First confirm the key exists: enter the selector from the failing message's DKIM-Signature header. If no key is found, publish the record your email provider gives you. If the key is found, the usual causes are a key copied with missing characters, a signature made with a different selector, or a mailing list or security gateway that changed the message after it was signed.

How do I check SPF, DKIM and DMARC at once?

+

Run the domain health check, which reads the SPF, DMARC and MX records and tries the common DKIM selectors in one pass. To see whether a real message passed, open its raw source and read the Authentication-Results header, which shows the receiver's spf=, dkim= and dmarc= verdicts.
