CAA Record Checker

Enter a domain to see which certificate authorities are allowed to issue certificates for it, including rules inherited from a parent domain — for anyone managing TLS certificates or debugging a failed issuance.

What is a CAA record?

A CAA (Certification Authority Authorization) record is a DNS record that names the certificate authorities permitted to issue TLS certificates for a domain. Every public CA must check it before issuing. If the record exists and the CA is not listed, the CA has to refuse the request.

Why CAA records matter

Without a CAA record, any of the publicly trusted certificate authorities can issue a certificate for your domain to anyone who passes that CA's validation. A CAA record narrows that to the CAs you actually use, which limits the damage if a different CA's validation is tricked or misconfigured.

Checking CAA has been mandatory for all public CAs since September 2017 under the CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements. The record format is defined in RFC 8659.

CAA also causes outages. If you switch certificate providers — or your hosting platform does — and the CAA record still names only the old CA, the next renewal fails. That is the most common reason to end up on this page.

How to read the results

TagMeaning
issueA CA allowed to issue certificates for this name.
issuewildA CA allowed to issue wildcard certificates. If absent, wildcards follow the issue rules.
iodefAn address a CA may notify about a request that violated the policy. Optional.
issue ";"No CA may issue. Used on domains that should never have a certificate.

Inherited rules. A CA looks for CAA records on the exact name first, then on each parent in turn — app.eu.example.com, eu.example.com, example.com — and uses the first set it finds. The checker does the same and tells you which name the rules came from, so a subdomain shows its parent's policy rather than "no record".

No CAA record anywhere is not an error. It means every CA is allowed, which is the default for most domains.

CAA values for common certificate authorities

Certificate authorityCAA value
Let's Encryptletsencrypt.org
Google Trust Servicespki.goog
DigiCertdigicert.com
Sectigosectigo.com
GlobalSignglobalsign.com
Amazon (ACM)amazon.com
ZeroSSLsectigo.com

A domain using Let's Encrypt for normal certificates and wildcards, with violation reports sent to the security team:

example.com. CAA 0 issue "letsencrypt.org"
example.com. CAA 0 issuewild "letsencrypt.org"
example.com. CAA 0 iodef "mailto:security@example.com"
Hosting platforms and CDNs issue certificates on your behalf, often from more than one CA. Before adding CAA, check your platform's documentation for the full list it needs — Cloudflare, Vercel, Netlify and AWS each document theirs.

How to fix a CAA issuance error

If a certificate request fails with a CAA error, the CA you are using is not in the list that applies to the name.

  • Run this check on the exact hostname that failed, not just the root domain.
  • Note which name the rules came from. A record on the parent domain applies to every subdomain beneath it.
  • Add an issue record for the new CA next to the existing ones, or replace the old value.
  • For a wildcard certificate, check issuewild too — an issuewild ";" blocks wildcards even when issue allows the CA.
  • Wait for the old record's TTL to pass, then retry the request.

A CNAME on the name being checked is followed: the CA uses the CAA records of the CNAME's target. If a subdomain is aliased to a provider, that provider's CAA policy applies to it.

Preguntas frecuentes

Do I need a CAA record?

+

It is optional. Without one, any public certificate authority may issue for your domain. Adding one is a low-cost hardening step once you know every CA your hosting, CDN and certificate tooling uses. Getting the list wrong blocks renewals, so check it first.

What does the 0 in a CAA record mean?

+

It is the flags field. 0 means the tag is non-critical, which is right for issue, issuewild and iodef. A value of 128 marks the tag critical: a CA that does not understand the tag must refuse to issue.

Does a CAA record on the root domain apply to subdomains?

+

Yes, unless the subdomain has its own. A CA climbs from the requested name toward the root and uses the first CAA set it finds, so a policy on example.com covers www.example.com and every other name without its own record.

How do I allow more than one certificate authority?

+

Publish one issue record per CA at the same name. A CA is permitted if any record lists it. There is no limit on how many you add, though listing only the CAs you really use is the point of the record.

Will a CAA record break my existing certificate?

+

No. CAA is checked only when a certificate is issued or renewed. Certificates that already exist keep working until they expire. The risk is at the next renewal, if the CA doing it is not on the list.

What is the difference between issue and issuewild?

+

issue controls all certificates for the name. issuewild controls only wildcard certificates such as *.example.com and, when present, overrides issue for them. Without any issuewild record, wildcard requests are judged by the issue records.
