DMARC Checker

Enter a domain to read its DMARC record, see which policy receivers will actually apply, and find the mistakes that stop reports arriving — for anyone responsible for a domain that sends email.

Results come from public resolvers (Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and Google 8.8.8.8) and are cached for up to a minute. A mail server may see something different if a record changed recently — changes take up to the record's TTL to propagate.

What is a DMARC record?

A DMARC record is a DNS TXT record at _dmarc.yourdomain.com that tells receiving mail servers what to do with messages that fail SPF and DKIM checks for your domain — deliver, quarantine or reject — and where to send reports about who is sending mail in your name.

Why DMARC matters

SPF and DKIM each prove something about a message, but neither is tied to the From address a person sees. DMARC, defined in RFC 7489, adds that link. A message passes DMARC when SPF or DKIM passes and the domain it passed for matches the From domain. That match is called alignment.

Without a DMARC record, anyone can put your domain in the From line and most receivers will deliver it. With one at p=reject, they will not. DMARC is also now a delivery requirement: Google and Yahoo have required a DMARC record from anyone sending 5,000 or more messages a day to their users since February 2024.

How to read the results

TagMeaningWhat to look for
pPolicy for the domainnone only monitors. quarantine sends failures to spam. reject blocks them.
spPolicy for subdomainsDefaults to p. A weaker sp leaves every subdomain open to spoofing.
ruaWhere aggregate reports goWithout it you get no data and cannot safely tighten the policy.
rufWhere failure reports goOptional. Many receivers no longer send these for privacy reasons.
pctShare of failing mail the policy applies toAnything under 100 is a rollout stage, not a finished setup.
adkim / aspfAlignment moder (relaxed, the default) allows subdomains. s requires an exact match.

If the domain you checked is a subdomain with no record of its own, the checker shows the organizational domain's record instead, because that is the one receivers apply.

A safe rollout from p=none to p=reject

  1. Publish p=none with a rua address. Nothing changes for your mail; reports start arriving within a day or two.
  2. Read the reports for two to four weeks. Find every legitimate source — the CRM, the helpdesk, the invoicing system — and fix its SPF or DKIM so it passes with alignment.
  3. Move to p=quarantine. Add pct=25 first if the volume is large, then raise it.
  4. Move to p=reject once the reports show only mail you do not recognize failing.
Starting record
_dmarc.example.com. TXT "v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@example.com"
Finished record
_dmarc.example.com. TXT "v=DMARC1; p=reject; rua=mailto:dmarc@example.com"

Build either with the DMARC generator.

Common DMARC mistakes this check finds

Two DMARC records. Receivers that find more than one treat the domain as having none. Keep exactly one TXT record at _dmarc.

v=DMARC1 is not first. The version tag must open the record and p must be present, or the record is ignored.

Reports sent to another domain without permission. If rua points at an address on a different domain, that domain must publish a record authorizing it, or receivers will not send the reports:

example.com._report._dmarc.reports-provider.com. TXT "v=DMARC1"

This check looks that record up for you. Most reporting providers publish a wildcard, so it usually passes without any action.

p=none left in place for years. It collects reports but stops nothing. If reports are not being read, the record is doing no work.

DMARC only protects the exact From domain. It does nothing about look-alike domains such as examp1e.com — that needs separate monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the DMARC record published?

+

As a TXT record on the _dmarc subdomain of the domain in your From address. For mail from user@example.com, receivers query _dmarc.example.com. The record must start with v=DMARC1 and contain a p tag.

What is the difference between p=none, p=quarantine and p=reject?

+

p=none asks receivers to deliver failing mail as usual and just report on it. p=quarantine asks them to treat it as suspicious, which normally means the spam folder. p=reject asks them to refuse it during delivery, so the recipient never sees it.

Does DMARC need both SPF and DKIM to pass?

+

No. One is enough, as long as it is aligned with the From domain. In practice you want both: SPF breaks when mail is forwarded, and DKIM breaks if a mailing list rewrites the message, so each covers the other's weak spot.

Do subdomains need their own DMARC record?

+

Not necessarily. If a subdomain has no record, receivers use the organizational domain's record and apply its sp tag, or its p tag when sp is absent. Publish a separate record on a subdomain only when it needs a different policy.

Why am I not receiving DMARC reports?

+

The usual causes are a missing or misspelled rua tag, a report address on another domain that has not published the authorization record, or simply low volume — receivers only report on domains they actually received mail from. Reports arrive roughly once every 24 hours.

What does pct do in a DMARC record?

+

pct sets the percentage of failing messages the policy applies to; the rest are handled under the next weaker policy. pct=25 with p=reject rejects a quarter and quarantines the remainder. It is a rollout dial, and the default is 100.

Why did DMARC fail?

+

DMARC fails when neither SPF nor DKIM passes in alignment with the From domain. The common causes are a sending service that is not in your SPF record, a service that signs with its own domain instead of yours, a DKIM key that is missing or mistyped, and forwarding that breaks SPF. Your DMARC aggregate reports show which source failed.
